The Badyan or Star Anise is the unusual fruit of a small oriental tree grown exclusively in southern china, indo-china and japan. It is generally used for culinary purposes such as in sweetmeats and also in confectionery. Star anise has carminative, stomachic, stimulant and diuretic properties and is useful to combat colic and rheumatism. Further, it is commonly used as flavouring agent in medicinal teas, cough mixtures and pastilles.
