In the shell mould casting process sand is poured on a heated metal model. The furan bonded sand hardens starting from the metal surface and a roughly one centimetre thick core is then lifted off the model and glued together with the other half after which molten metal, at roughly 750°C, is poured into the sand model.
Shell mould casting is suitable for thin walled products with good surface finish requirements. The use of sand cores further extends the product range. The shell mould casting process gives a better surface finish and closer tolerances than the sand casting. It is possible to cast thin walled products at close tolerances. The initial tooling cost is higher than for sand casting.
The shell mould casting method is well applicable for preseries of pressure die cast components. The surface of the casting is processed to be similar to a pressure die cast one and high accuracy of dimensions can be achieved through machining. Changes during the product development phase is easily and quickly implemented.
