Known by the botanical name Mentha arvinces, menthol powder is also known by the name of Melted Menthol and Peppermint Camphor. With its origins in India, it has appearance of colorless crystals/flakes with a sharp peppermint odor. These deliver peppermint and have a cooling taste. With melting point of 36 - 400 degree C, Specific Gravity at 350 degree C - 0.890 – 0.910, Refractive index at 300 degree C - 1.450 – 1.465 and Optical Rotation at 350 C -360 to -480 (10% alc. solution), it has slight solubility in water; soluble in alcohol, ether, chloroform and freely soluble in liquid petrolatum and glacial acetic acid. Some of the uses include in perfumery, cigarettes, liqueurs, confectionery, cough drops, pharmaceutical preparations, nasal inhalers and other areas.
