This alloy is produced by electric arc melting of chromite, an iron magnesium chromium oxide and the most important chromium ore. It is essentially a carbothermic reduction operation taking place at high temperatures. Ferro Chrome contains iron and chromium, ranging between 50% and 70%.
This alloy has the following composition:
* Cr: 60
* Si: 3.50
* C: 6 – 8
* P: 0.05 max
* S: 0.05 max
The major use of this alloy is in the production of stainless steel, which is a steel alloy with a minimum of 10% chrome by content, the average chrome content being 18%. Stainless steel depends on chrome for its appearance and its corrosion resisting properties. Further, High Carbon Ferro Chrome is most commonly used in specialist applications such as engineering steels, whereas Lower Carbon Ferro Chromes is produced in smaller quantities for more specialized applications.
