Perforating the foundation, it finds its way to upper levels by moving through wall  cavities, joints and floors. Termite which are 1/8",can pentrate any type of those construction be it slab,craw space or basement type because they have glands which leave acid and dilute the material.They can enter thorough openings and cracks as small as 1/64".and where they cannot enter foundation ones,they build their mud tunnels up the side to get to the wood.These termite never sleep ,they are constantly at work. To detect termite activity look swarms of termites flying from soil or wood, pencil-size mud tubes on the wall, Gallerirs in wood. Since termites have their nest inside the soil, A Chemical barrier between the soil and structure, is the most effective means of controlling tremite movement, thereby preventing damage.
