Dry Type Transformers use various solid insulation materials, the most commonly used insulation materials in dry type transformers are paper based, varnishes, polymers or silicones or a combination of these.  These dry transformers pass the heat directly into the ambient surroundings. Some dry type transformers also pass the heat built up through a epoxy encapsulant.

Dry type transformers are considered maintenance free during their service life time as long as load on transformer is within design limits and air flow through the fins is not obstructed by dust or any other material.
