The word mica is thought to be derived from the Latin word 'micare' for glitteren, in reference to the brilliant appearance of this mineral. Chemically it is Hydruos Aluminium Potassium Silicate.

It has density of 2.8, Refractive index of 1.5 and high oil Absorption of 50-80 ml/100 g.

Mica has a lamellar form with a shiny luster and has a high dielectric strength and excellent chemical stability, making it a favoured material for manufacturing capacitors for radio frequency applications.

It is also used as an insulator in high voltage electrical equipment.

The finer, wet ground grades are favoured by surface coatings industry, in which this pigment is used to aid moisture resistance and to increase film strength.

Some toothpastes contain powdered white mica. This acts as a mild abrasive to aid polishing of the tooth surface, and also adds a osmetically pleasing glittery shimmer to the paste.
