Benzoic acid, C6H5COOH is found in nature in free and combined forms and is one of the most commercially important aromatic carboxylic acids. Benzoic acid is prepared on industrial scale by the catalytic oxidation of Toluene. Its salts have wide usage as preservatives. When ingested by most vertebrates, its salts are extracted as hip uric acid. Next to Phenol, the greatest single usage to day for benzoic acid is as esters.
